Figure of Eight
A characteristic element where the apparatus creates a figure of eight shape or pattern in any plane or direction.

Flags
RSG apparatus not recognised by the FIG (can be used in displays, but not competition). The width of the flag is 35-60 cm, the length is 80-100 cm and the stick is 50-90 cm long. The flag is made from silk, satin or light nylon and the main movements are swings, circles and throws.

Flexion
Where the angle of the joint is decreased (note the flexed feet in the picture)

Flexibility
A wide range of movement in the joints of the body.

Flick
Sharp use of thumb and fingers to flick (release) the club into that air so that it turns a small rotation in front of the body before being re-caught.

Freehand
Also known as freestanding - Rhythmic routine done without apparatus.

Frontal plane
Movements performed in front of and parallel to the body.
|

Front legmount
A balance with one leg raised infront of the gymnasts body to a front splits position. Both legs must be strait.

Formation
In multiples routines where gymnasts create a shape or pattern, and then the order of gymnasts changes to create another shape or pattern.

Fouette
(whipped) A pivot involving a sharp turn of the body away from the extended leg and a swift inward action of the lower leg. The movement should have the dynamic character of a 'crack of a whip'.
