Scale
A balanced position on one leg with the other leg raised backward and the upper body lowered slightly forwards. Potition of arms varies.

Scarves
RSG apparatus not recognised by the FIG (can
be used in displays, but not competition). The width of the scarf is 85-100 cm, the length is 150-200 cm and the stick is 50-90 cm long. The scarf is made from silk, satin or light nylon and the main movements are swings, serpents and throws. All movements should be light and floating and the scarf shouldnot touch the floor.

Scissor Kick
(Hitch kich, pas de ciseaux) Jump from one foot to the other, swinging strait legs forward, with a scissor action.

Serpents
A snaking like action with the ribbon causing a ripple effect.

Sequence
A series of gymnastic moves linked togeather by dance and jumps.

Side legmount
A balance position with free leg to the side in a 180 degree split. Can be hald with hands, or with out to increase the difficulty.

Side splits
(also know as Chinese splits) Sitting on the floor, each leg is extended out horizontaly to the side of the body, forming a 180 degree split of the legs.

Sissone
A split jump from 2 feet, with the front leg lower than horizontal, and the back leg higher than horozontal.

Skaters pivot
Pivot with support leg bent at 90 degrees and free leg strait and at the side so that the foot is only just off the ground.

Skip
A series of fast step-hops taken with alternate feet. The rhythm is uneven.

Spiral
Continuous circling/spiralling type movement, may be of the body, or of the apparatus (usually with ribbon, as shown in the picture)

Spiral turn
A two footed turn on the spot with arms strait out to sides. The head looks forward at a spot on the wall and keeps this focus for the entire turn, causing the upper back to arch and head drop back dring the middle of the turn inorder to keep the focus. The turn begins with one leg crossed over the other.

Splits
A potition in which one leg is extended forward, the other leg is extended backward at right angles to the trunk.

Split leap
Forward leap, from one foot to the other, showing splits position of legs in the air.

Spotting
The movement of the head in pirouettes and turns. The eyes pick a spot and look at it for as long as possible during the turn inorder to assist spacial awarness and keep count of the turns.

Stag leap
Front leg bent and the other leg extended backwards into the air. (Back leg should be straiter than in the picture)

Straddle
A position with your legs stretched wide apart.

Supple
Loose, with a wide range of movement in the joints of the body.
|
 |
Support leg
The leg on which the gymnast balances or turns on.
|
|
Symetrical
When the two sides, or parts, of a whole look identical. A star jump forms a symetrical shape.
